Enjoying the nighttime flight of the Mexican free-tailed bats that have made the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge their home is one of Austin's most unusual things to do. Up to 1.5 million insect-eating mammals take to the sky each evening at dusk from March to November, making it the world's largest urban bat colony. The result is a spectacular show as they fly in gigantic formations from beneath the bridge up to two miles high in search of mosquitoes, moths, grasshoppers, and other flying pests. It can take up to 45 minutes for all the fuzzy creatures to leave their den. When the pups (babies) reach the age of maturity, they join their mothers on the nighttime flight.
